Medfield, MA, October 26, 1999 - .NU Domain Ltd announced today that it has adopted a new trade mark and intellectual property policy aimed at reducing cybersquatting which was just approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN - See the policy), the new authority for domain name and IP address management.

.NU Domain is the first Top Level Domain (TLD) name to accept the policy, which was developed by ICANN and its advisory Domain Name Supporting Organization (DNSO) over the past several months.

.NU Domain Ltd’s own adoption of ICANN’s Universal Dispute Resolution Policy was posted today at http://www.nunames.nu/udrp.htm, and is effective immediately in the .NU domain name space. Final implementation, however, awaits ICANN’s selection of Approved Providers for its Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy, a list of which will be posted at http://www.icann.org/udrp/approved-providers.htm.

"The recent approval by ICANN of this policy is an important step in the move to privatize the Internet and to free TLD managers and registrars from having to be judge and jury on questions of trade mark abuse," said Semich. "This takes a great load off our backs as TLD managers. We now have a simple, universally applied, solution to the problem of resolving trade mark claims in a fair and equitable manner."

As a former member of the Names Council of the DNSO, Semich voted against some sections of an early version of the UDRP. Despite that, the policy was eventually approved by the majority of the Names Council and forwarded to ICANN. ICANN responded to pressure from noncommercial interests, however, and addressed several of their concerns in the final policy that it approved yesterday. "The changes made in the policy since that original UDRP proposal was submitted have resolved my early concerns," Semich said. "I also expect that ICANN will reconsider some elements of the UDRP as it is tested in practice as well. Meanwhile, we are glad it is available for our use."
